Scientist's lifelong obsession with mystery of elusive 'pink zebra' seaweed
Off the coast of Cornwall, beneath waters most associate with the Great Barrier Reef's fame, lies a quieter marvel: maerl beds, ancient carpets of calcified seaweed that host some of the ocean's richest life. Forty years ago, marine scientist Christine Maggs discovered a tiny fragment of pink-striped seaweed living on maerl during her PhD research. It was unlike anything in the scientific literature, and she suspected it might be new to science. But proving that required a larger sample—something that would elude her for decades. Throughout her career, Maggs caught only fleeting glimpses of the elusive "pink zebra" seaweed, never enough to confirm its identity. Then, two years ago, specialist divers surveying the health of Cornish maerl beds brought up samples that independent marine biologist Francis Bunker thought might be what Maggs had been seeking. He sent the specimens to her in London, where she nurtured them in a wine fridge—the perfect cool, dark environment—until they grew large enough for DNA sequencing. The molecular analysis, conducted with colleague Beatriz de Barros Barreto, confirmed what Maggs had hoped: the seaweed was indeed a species new to science. A sample now resides in the Natural History Museum's official collection, and the findings will soon be published in the journal Phycologia.
